The Subways are a band who may not have captured the hearts of millions, but instead have an astonishing cult like following. There’s a good reason for why they are so loved. They have a real knack for making great indie rock tunes which have a good blend of pop-punk elements; their lyrics are often fun fuelled and clever; they have an interesting history as a band (from them winning a competition to play at Glastonbury, before they had an album, to the fact that the lead singer and bassist were engaged while in the band together, and broke up, but decided to keep the band together) and of course their mesmerising high energy level live shows.
And so the band from Hertfordshire, England have just recently released their third studio album, Money And Celebrity. The album is full of the same blend of fast paced indie rock goodness, which has been produced by Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur, Babyshambles, Kasier Chiefs, The Courteeners) and the album rings out the same sort of class that you associate with the bands that Street has worked with in the past.
The lead single to come from the album, We Don’t Need Money To Have A Good Time, is a stand out on the first play through. As I gave the album more time, tracks like It’s A Party, Leave My Side and Celebrity really start to jump out at me as to why these guys have such a loyal following in England, but also here in Australia.
If you’re a fan of similar bands like Blood Red Shoes, The Wombats, The Hives and The Rifles, then these guys are for you.
You can get a copy of their new album here and be sure to have a hunt around at good music stores for their earlier releases.
